Comprehensive Psychoeducational Evaluations

Thorough evaluations that uncover strengths, challenges, and the path forward

A comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation helps you understand how your child learns, thinks, and navigates emotions and behavior. If your child is struggling in school, having trouble focusing, or showing signs of frustration or anxiety, an evaluation can identify what is getting in the way and why. Our goal is to help you determine whether a full evaluation is truly the right step. Not every concern requires a comprehensive assessment, and we are always honest about what will be most useful for your child. When an evaluation is indicated, it can open the door to school-based services, accommodations, or treatment options that are well matched to your child’s needs. We provide a complete picture of your child’s strengths and challenges, leading to practical, personalized recommendations for home and school. These are the evaluations we conduct when there is a concern about a learning disorder, ADHD, autism, or other related diagnoses.

Our evaluations are comprehensive, personalized, and designed to truly understand your child. We know this is a significant commitment of time and resources, and we take that seriously. Rather than relying on pre-set templates or shortcuts, we spend 16–20+ hours gathering information, reviewing records, speaking with parents and teachers, and carefully preparing a report. This ensures we provide clear insights, informed diagnoses, and recommendations that can open doors to services and support.

Rather than limiting assessments to a single area, we take a broad, whole-child approach by examining cognitive, academic, attention, memory, executive functioning, social, and emotional skills. This helps us understand the full picture. For example, what looks like ADHD may actually be anxiety, and a child with dyslexia may also be experiencing attention challenges that affect learning, or an impact on their self-esteem. To deepen our understanding, we gather input from teachers and other important adults who see your child in different settings. Your child is more than who they are in a testing room, and your evaluation should reflect that.

Each of our psychologists takes on only one or two evaluations at a time so your child receives the careful attention, time, and individualized care they deserve.

Our Process
Our thorough evaluation process typically takes 4–6 weeks from start to finish and includes:

  • Review of Records – Gathering background forms and relevant documents such as report cards, prior evaluations, and IEP or 504 plans.

  • Intake Meeting – An in-depth parent/caregiver conversation, typically held virtually.

  • Rating Forms – Standardized questionnaires about your child’s development, behavior, and functioning.

  • Teacher/Provider Input – Feedback from teachers or other professionals who know your child.

  • Testing Sessions – Two to three office-based sessions, each lasting a few hours, using a variety of cognitive, academic, attention, memory, and play-based assessments to understand how your child processes different types of information. We spend 6–9 hours with your child in total and space the sessions across several days rather than one long testing day, so we can assess your child at their optimal level.

  • Feedback & Report – A comprehensive written report with findings, diagnoses (if applicable), and personalized recommendations. We review everything with you in a thorough feedback session and remain available for ongoing consultation as needed.

We use the most current tools and evidence-based practices. Our reports are written with clarity so parents and teachers, regardless of their experience with assessments, can easily understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and the recommended next steps. While some evaluations are written primarily for other clinicians, ours are designed to be accessible and practical, giving families and educators the guidance they need to support a child’s success.

Families often share that our evaluations not only opened doors to needed services but also helped them see their child in a new light. More than a diagnosis, our evaluations provide a roadmap that offers clarity, confidence, and actionable next steps to help your child thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We take pride in offering thorough and thoughtful assessments that give you meaningful answers and a clear path forward.

Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)
An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is a private assessment that families can request if they disagree with a school’s evaluation or decisions about special education services. It provides an independent, second opinion to better understand a child’s learning needs and guide educational planning. Families have the right to request an IEE if their child has been evaluated through the school. We are currently approved providers for Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs) in Fairfax (FCPS), Prince William (PWCS), Arlington (APS), Alexandria (ACPS) and Loudoun (LCPS).

As school psychologists, we specialize in these evaluations and understand what information schools find most useful. Our IEE evaluations include psychological, neuropsychological, and educational components as appropriate, and are tailored to your child’s unique profile. If your district approves an IEE, we’re happy to discuss our availability and whether we’re a good fit for your family.
