SPACE Treatment

Now Available!
Parent-Based Treatment Program for Children and Adolescents with Anxiety

We are excited to offer SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), a parent-based treatment program for children and adolescents experiencing anxiety, OCD, and related challenges.

Developed at the Yale Child Study Center by Dr. Eli Leibowitz, SPACE is an evidence-based approach that empowers parents with practical strategies to support their child’s growth while reducing anxiety-driven behaviors. You are encouraged to learn more about SPACE here.

With specialized training and extensive experience supporting parents and anxious children, we now offer SPACE in an individualized format to provide personalized care and optimize results. This service is currently available for families in Virginia and is offered virtually.

SPACE is most appropriate for families in which a child’s anxiety leads parents to make frequent accommodations, such as providing reassurance, avoiding triggers, or altering family routines, typically with daily or near-daily impact. The program is especially beneficial for children who have been resistant to traditional therapy, or for parents who want to feel empowered by changing their own responses rather than waiting for the child to change first.  SPACE is not recommended for children with active high-risk behaviors, such as suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Parents should be aware that the program requires weekly assignments, and its success depends on their consistent engagement, attendance, and follow-through.

What to Expect with
SPACE Treatment

1

Intake

You, as the parent(s) or parent figurers, will meet with a licensed psychologist trained in SPACE to discuss your child’s history, explore current factors contributing to anxiety, and gain a clearer understanding of your family’s dynamics

2

Session with Child
(if appropriate)

The clinician may meet with you and your child together to explain how anxiety functions in the brain and body, and why it can lead to certain reactions and behaviors. Although the ongoing work takes place with parents, this shared session helps ensure everyone has a common understanding and language about anxiety, creating a supportive foundation for the changes to come.

3

10-12 Parent Sessions

During these sessions, you will work closely with the clinician to understand and gradually change how you respond to your child’s anxiety. The focus remains on what you can control—your own actions and reactions. Parents will complete brief assignments between sessions to practice new strategies at home. Because SPACE is an evidence-based program, completing the full course is strongly recommended for best results.

Our therapy services are out of network, but you may be able to receive insurance reimbursement. Ask us for more information.
